Quilting inspiration: Vintage floral fabric

Vintage fabric in a range of pretty floral prints is always a classic. Especially when they are printed on beautiful crisp cottons. From beginner sewists, to experienced dressmakers, quilters and interior designers, floral printed cottons are a go-to fabric. For me, it is the versatility of the fabric. Cotton is cool for the summer, easy to sew and easy to use up the scrap pieces left over, especially for those skilled quilters out there.

Tracey got in touch during lockdown as she was on the hunt for vintage floral fabrics in red and pink to make a wedding quilt. She says…

‘I am a patchwork enthusiast and I have been asked to make a wedding quilt using vintage fabrics or vintage style fabrics. The gift is from the bride’s parents and it will be a surprise. The bride, Victoria, is a huge fan of 50s vintage so it would be good to reflect that.  She also loves red! Obviously there are many different fabrics, but my own thoughts gravitated towards a chintz style with red roses, and possibly something similar with blue flowers to reflect the groom. The design  chosen is Dresden plate, so each flower will have 20 petals, ergo requiring coordinating fabrics to go with the main themed fabrics.  The thought behind using second hand fabrics is to provide the “something old” from the wedding rhyme. I want to ensure choosing the right fabric or style for the era so any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated.’

I was thrilled that Tracey had asked me to source some vintage pieces for this thoughtful wedding gift. My favourite part of running a fabric business is co-ordinating colours and prints of the vintage fabrics. I’ll pulled together a selection for Tracey to choose from. She kept me updated throughout the project and here are some work in progress photos.

Tracey mixed vintage fabrics with some new cottons. Below is a photo of the final quilt. Even from a photo you can see the love put into this beautiful piece. Two other women embroidered the bride and groom’s names along with the date, which gives it a finishing touch and lovely that many people were involved in this thoughtful wedding gift.
