Olive Road x Hochanda TV

Hochanda invited me back, so I must have done OK last time. I was back on telly yesterday with my accessory patterns and kits. The lovely Hayley presented the show and I gave some demonstrations on how to make some of the items. I focused on zips at on this show as I know zips can be tricky for the beginner sewist.

Each pattern and kit comes with step-by-step instructions including sewing hacks such as putting the zip in first. It isn’t how the professionals do it but I prefer the easy way and if it works, why not? I like to use vintage metal zips and make a feature out of them. Inserting the zip first makes it easier to construct the rest of the zipper pouch or cushion cover. You can view my demonstrations on Hochanda’s website here.

I design the accessories patterns using the vintage fabric as inspiration. Many of the early fabric pieces I bought were only small but very striking. I wanted to design a pattern to make a practical product but also to champion the fabric. The Betty tote bag, Olivia kit bag and the Gloria cushion cover are great ways to display a unique vintage design that can be proudly shown off when out and about or on a chair at home. The Mary zipper pouch uses up smaller pieces of fabric and the Millie pinny can be made from a mixture of smaller pieces of fabrics.

I think about practical solutions to problems. For example, The Government are recommending us to wear a mask when on public transport and in shops. I didn’t want to put my dirty mask straight into my handbag. So I use one of my Olivia kit bags to keep the dirty masks in and another Olivia bag to keep a clean mask in for the journey home. Or a Mary zipper pouch is ideal to hold my mobile phone so it doesn’t get lost at the bottom of my bag. Once I’ve thought about the problem, I come up with a few design solutions, make a couple of samples and try them out and give them to friends and family to use them and give me feedback.

Olivia Kit Bag

All five designs are available as a kit, including pattern, step-by-step instructions, enough vintage fabric for the project and trims (e.g. zip). Each one is available from the Hochanda website with a choice between floral or geometric. The fabric choice is a lucky dip as I only have small pieces of fabric so they are unique.

I’m also selling the patterns as a pack of five with the instructions printed in one booklet. The paper is 100% recycled and it comes packaged in a plastic wallet that is made from 100% recycle materials. The pattern bundle is available from Hochanda and Olive Road London. I’m also selling the trims if you are struggling to get hold of quality webbing, toggles and cord. I haven’t had chance to list the zips or shower proof linings yet but get in touch with the size and colour you are after and I’ll check my stock for you.

Products were exactly as demonstrated & shown on-screen.
