Towelling fabric for summer

vintage flannel towelling fabric

This super versatile fabric is perfect for summer. Cool and absorbent, it can be used for shorts, dresses and beach cover ups. Or even throws for the beach or park, comfy and absorbent cushions or a handy beach or picnic bag. I have a small edit of vintage towelling fabrics for sale. I’ve listed some ideas on how to utilise these fun pieces of fabric.

The duck towelling fabric has sold out, I only had one piece. Sign up to my newsletter to shop from the new arrivals of vintage fabrics 24 hours before they are on general release.

Beachwear

Simplicity have re-released this fab beachwear vintage pattern. £12 from The Foldline and available in two sizes: 4-12 or 12-20. This fun, retro duck print suits the boxy jacket cover up or wrap skirt. Vintage towelling fabric is lovely and soft and has enough drape to work in this slinky design. A cotton poplin might work better for the bra top if you don’t want it to be too bulky. The duck towelling has sold out but this soft blue towelling would also work. It has a small square jacquard design. Not too thick with a lovely drape, it would work equally well in this design. or perhaps in a co-ord short and top set. Turn the Maven Simone set into a short co-ord set and you are beach ready!

Park and Picnic Accessories

These thicker weight cotton towelling fabrics are great for making accessories. Try one of my oversized Betty Tote bags from towelling fabric. Handy to keep your picnic, a book and sunglasses in. But also doubles up as a handy rug to sit on in the park. If you need a bigger picnic rug, try adding a waterproof back to the towelling but adding poppers to the towelling. Then the other side of poppers onto a piece of showerproof fabric such as an old shower curtain. We always need something a bit waterproof for the British summer!

If you have run out of time to make your own beach cover ups then I recommend heading to So English Beachwear. Designed and made in the UK, these luxurious beach cover ups have more than a nod to vintage style. Many of the designs are trimmed with bold printed vintage towelling. This design modelled by Amber Butchart will keep you warm and dry on those chillier British summer days.
