Vintage Barkcloth

Barkcloth is named after the weave and texture of the fabric. It replicates the traditional fabric known as Barkcloth made in Africa and South East Asia. Pieces of bark are soaked to make them pliable and then woven into a paperlike fabric. The vintage Barkcloths available on my online fabric shop are from the mid 20th Century. They are nearly all cotton based and take on bright colours and vibrant prints beautifully. They vary in weight and quality. Traditionally used for soft furnishings but they also look amazing for fashion, especially in boxy styles such as Mavern’s French Dart dress pattern.
